Bunnell Notch Trail
6 Miles 1350' Elevation gain
Kevin, Judy and Emma
The plan had been to summit Mount Cabot, but a number of things prevented us from making it this day. We started a little later than planned, then ran into poor weather which made the 4 hour drive a chore. Arriving at the trailhead at 11:45 gave us a very late start. I was feeling somewhat under the weather and Jude was tired. There was four or five inches of heavy, wet snow that stuck to our snowshoes and, although the trail had previously been broken, it was like breaking trail again.
We decided to turn around at 2:00-2:15, so we had only made it to the junction with the Kilkenney Ridge Trail at that time. There was freezing fog at this elevation, and although the woods were beautiful, we felt it would be unwise to forge on at this point considering our energy levels, the lateness of the day, and slow progress. The mountain would be there another day.
Somewhere on the way out, Jude dropped Emma's water bottle, so, since we were in the area, we went back to look in the morning. We hiked in about a mile but didn't find it. We saw other hikers heading in as we came out who said they would pick it up if they saw it. I left my email address on their car. Hopefully we'll here from them. I guess it's no big deal if we don't get it back, I just hate losing stuff, don't you?
It turned out they did find it and mailed it back to us which was very good of them. Trail Magic is something you can’t really explain, but when it happens you know it! In the coming months we were able to pay it forward by doing something similar for somebody else, and we were glad for the opportunity!
