Mount Morgan/Mount Percival 9/11/05
Trip to Mount Morgan 2200’ and Mount Percival 2212’
5.1 miles 1550’ elevation gain
Kevin, Judy and Emma
It was hard to believe four years had passed since 9/11. It is true the years go by faster and faster as you get older. My granddaughter was born 9/5/01, my oldest son had a bad motorcycle accident 9/7/01. On 9/11/01 I was driving into Mass. General to see him. Mine was the only car heading into Boston as the northbound lane was jammed with people evacuating. We watched the towers burn on the tiny overhead TV he had in his room. We watched in horror as they collapsed. It was a full week. I hope I never have a repeat. It was good to be up above the lake with some cool air. I love the autumn. It's the best time to hike, no humidity and the bugs have given up for the year. It makes a great loop that isn't too strenuous by climbing Mount Morgan Trail then heading north along the Crawford Ridgepole Trail and descending by Mount Percival Trail. The trail can be made a little more challenging by climbing the ladders near the summit of Mount Morgan. They can also be avoided by following the trail around to the north. Both ways come out on the ledges just below the summit where there are great views of Squam Lake and the hills to the east. Near the summit of Mount Percival there are caves formed from boulders just below the summit. One trail picks its way through these, there are some tight spaces where it's best to crawl. Again these can be added to the trip or completely avoided by taking the paralell trail. Always a great hike.
