No trip is complete when visiting the Rangeley area without making the short climb to the summit of Bald Mountain in Oquossoc. I first made this climd around 1979 and had to wait 21 years to do it again, but it was worth the wait. From this small summit it is amazing the number of mountains which can be seen, and I have not been able yet to identify them all. Even more amazing is the illusion that I am on an island surrounded on all sides by water as the vast Rangeley Lake Region lays out before me.
The waters of Rangeley Lake, Mooselookmeguntic and Cupsuptic, and Richardson Lakes are spread all around in front of you when viewing from the tower on this summit. Of particular interest to me is the distant view of the Northern Presidentials to the south. My guesstimate is that they lie 90 to 100 miles from here. Driving south on Rte. 16 from Rangeley I measured 98 miles to Pinkham Notch. Now I know this is not a straight line distance, but it isn't too far off. Well worth the small effort to climb for the spectacular views.
