  • For decades this type of tiny, Chickadee-sized bird has come to the maple trees & feeders in our backyard. They are masters of camouflage, and can lay flat and motionless, blending so well with their surroundings as to be undetectable to predators. For decades I have never been able to catch what I considered satisfactory photographs of these little guys. Until today they have eluded me, but today for some reason they decided to be less elusive. For some reason the light was great. For some reason they posed at just the right distance, and for some reason the settings on my camera were correct. And now, for some reason, I feel Captain Ahab has finally satisfactorily photographed his tiny White Whale- Brown Creeper (Certhia americana)... February 12, 2023.

  • By far the highlight of the day, getting the Stink-eye from this Barred Owl (Strix varia). Do you love these and other hawks and owls? Then please, NEVER USE PESTICIDES! Many of these beautiful birds die of Secondary Poisoning because they have ingested poisoned rodents. Please, take the time and learn about alternatives to rodent control that do not use Poisons! • Today's brilliant sunshine managed to find its way to the understory of this seemingly impenetrable Cedar Bog. Here along the Powow River in Kingston we have the largest stand of Atlantic White Cedar (Chamaecyparis thyoides) in the southern part of the state. Winter is the only time we venture into this tangled, mind numbing mess, when the sphagnum and standing water are frozen and safe to traverse. Straight line travel is absolutely impossible. The Madness of Mirkwood quickly comes to mind... February 24, 2023.
