The Inferno - Tuckerman Ravine 4/22/06

The Inferno/ Tuckerman Ravine

6 Miles 2000' Elevation gain

Kevin, Judy, Beren and Emma

The Inferno is designed to emulate the old ski race held in Tuckerman Ravine though nowadays it involves much more than skiing the bowl in Tuckerman Ravine. This is a pentathalon which consists of an 8 mile run, six miles of white water kayaking, an eighteen mile bike ride from Bartlett to Pinkham Notch, running up the Tuckerman Ravine Trail to the Bowl, climbing the Bowl then skiing a slalom course back down. Start training!

This hike was bittersweet for me. Between our hike to Mount Hale and this hike I had the worst experience of my life. I lost my oldest son. I cannot express in words how terrible going through this was. It is so unnatural to lose a child, a parent should never have to outlive a child. If I could have gone in his place, I surely would have. I am writing this trip report over a year later and I still feel terrible. The regrets are many, the guilt is unbearable and the depression is smothering. I have some good days, but the thought that I'll never see him again is always there. It is the first thing I think about when I wake in the morning and it's the last thing I think of when I fall asleep at night, IF I fall asleep. I knew I had to get back in the mountains, and I had been planning this trip before his death. I brought Beren, who is now my oldest son with us. I thought it might be good for him, too. At least it was something to do for the both of us besides grieving. Our loss was deep and we were both feeling the effects pretty heavily. This trip was something to at least distract us for a day. The hike up Tuckerman Ravine Trail to Lunch Rocks was crowded and really not much fun. The thing to do would be to get there very early and set up before the crowds pour in. Watching the race participants was fun, but I would get there earlier and set up for the day if I go again in the future. We didn't go again in '07 because of the crowds. It might be more fun to watch from Lion Head if I go again.
