Powow Paddling Summer 2014.
As a child I would often visit my grandmother's home, a quaint cottage known as "Still Waters" on the shore of Lake Pleasant in Montague, Massachusetts. As a restless boy I would play along the shores, though I was never allowed to swim as it was the water supply for the tiny village of Lake Pleasant. The village itself had quite a history, being a Spiritualist's Camp at the turn of the 20th Century. This attracted many folks from Boston and New York who would arrive in early summer and not leave until fall. My grandmother was the first child born there, but this is all another story, documented elsewhere. The reason I mention it is because it was there that my desire to live near the water, any water, was first forged in my heart.
When I was a man and my grandmother had passed away I failed at my first marriage. With children to house and feed on my own I lasted as long as I could take it, but just when I was losing my grip on that my parents jumped in and a plan took shape to find a house together. I believe the spirit of my grandmother led us to this spot which has been our home for the past 25 years, here on these 'Still Waters" beside the Powow River in Kingston, New Hampshire. My parents are gone, my children are grown and gone too, the oldest one of them is with my ma and dad, but I am still here with my wife and the Powow. This year I have done my best to capture it in pictures from my kayak… I hope you enjoy!
