On our way home Thursday we couldn't leave without another hike. That's what is great about Evan's (Kevin's )Notch. There are many choices of hikes from easy to moderate and strenuous. Blueberry Mountain would probably fall in the easy to moderate range. It's an easy approach along the Stonehouse Road, then an easy climb along the White Cairn Trail until you reach some ledges where it becomes a little more challenging before becoming easy again above the ledges and across the summit.
We like to ascend this way because a short side trip on the descent along the Stonehouse Trail brings you to one of the finest swimming holes in the White Mountains that I know of. The Rattlesnake Pool is well worth the five minute side trip. From the ledges on the way up there are fine views to the west of North and South Baldface, Eastman Mountain and further west to the Carter Range. To the north are great views of East and West Royce. To the south there are great views of Shell Pond and Deer Hill.
Today was outright hot, summer-like weather with no relief from clouds to block the sun. The trip across the summit was hot for people and small dogs so we headed down back into the shade of the trees on our way to the Rattlesnake Pool. Despite the time of year and the ice cold water, I can never seem to resist the temptation to dive in. The ice water gives a cleansing no hot shower or any amount of soap has ever given me, though it can leave me breathless for a few moments. A fine way to end the trip.
